Catherine Lowther — Incumbent

“I came to VT when I was 18 to go to college at Goddard College, I have lived in Central VT most of my life since then, and I have been a member of Hunger Mountain Co-op since 1989.

I grew up in a family of gardeners, and I have been gardening organically all my life. I have degrees in Psychology and Consciousness Studies, and I have been in private practice in Montpelier doing psychotherapy, holistic health counseling and conflict resolution since 1985. I taught at Goddard College from 1997 to 2020 in the Health Arts and Sciences Program, and the Sustainability Program, and I offered courses in Climate Change. I chaired the Goddard Sustainability Committee, did the carbon inventory for the college, and helped the college reach carbon neutrality in 2018. I have been a member of Al Gore’s Climate Reality Training Corps since 2017, and I was a mentor in the first online Climate Reality Training that took place July 18 – 26, 2020. I have been a member of the VT Climate Council’s Science and Data Subcommittee since 2022.

I was elected to the Co-op Council in 2021. I chair the Sustainability and Resilience Committee as we work to help the Co-op reduce its carbon footprint by increasing its local organic food sources, replacing equipment that uses propane with equipment that uses electricity, reducing its use of plastics, and building resilience to the impacts of climate change. I think that protecting the Co-op’s food sources by supporting local farmers and building community will become increasingly important as we experience rising temperatures, and more floods, droughts, and fires that destroy crops. I would like to help the Co-op become an example of how a business can reduce its environmental impact.”
